On a plane, on a train, in a client's office with locked Wi-Fi, or simply because you do not want your voice on someone's server: you want dictation that keeps working without internet. Most Mac dictation apps say they respect privacy, but they do very different things with your audio. Here is what six of them say on their own pages, read on 13 October 2026.
Get VoxFlow Pro for Mac, free →macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. Notarized by Apple. No account, no license key, no subscription.
Facts are from each maker's own pages, read on 13 October 2026: Wispr Flow data controls, Wispr Flow privacy, superwhisper.com, MacWhisper on Gumroad, tryvoiceink.com and Apple's Dictation guide. Apps change, so check before you rely on one.
| VoxFlow Pro for Mac | Wispr Flow | Superwhisper | MacWhisper | VoiceInk | macOS Dictation | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Works with no internet | Yes, after a one time model download on first launch | No: an offline device cannot start dictation | Yes, with local models | Yes | Yes | Only where Keyboard settings say your Mac processes it on device |
| Where your voice is transcribed | Always on your Mac (WhisperKit) | "Transcription always occurs on the cloud" | On your Mac with local models, or in the cloud with cloud models | "All transcription is done on your device" | "VoiceInk processes all voice transcription locally" | On your Mac or on Siri servers |
| Optional cloud features | None | Dictation cloud storage keeps transcripts, audio and history on Wispr servers if turned on | Cloud AI models | Cloud transcription through OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Deepgram, Groq, Gladia or your own Whisper server | Cloud Enhancement, which sends only the text, not your voice | Dictating into a search box is not covered by on device processing |
| Intel Macs offline | Yes, universal app | – | Their FAQ: offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon | Also works on Intel; its maker warns older Intel Macs can be slow | No, Apple Silicon only | Check Keyboard settings |
| Free option | Free, no paid tier | Free plan, paid plans per user | Free version; Pro monthly, yearly or lifetime | Free version, Pro one time | Paid one time, free trial | Built into macOS |
Wispr Flow also says it deletes your audio as soon as it is transcribed unless you turn on Dictation cloud storage, and keeps zero data retention agreements with its AI providers. The point here is not that cloud apps are careless. It is that they need a connection, and your voice leaves the Mac.
Cloud dictation can be very good: big models, AI clean up, sync across devices. The cost is that every sentence you say goes over the network first. That stops working on a plane, in a basement meeting room or on a hotel network that blocks the app, and it is a real question for anyone dictating client notes, patient details or anything under an NDA. With an on device model the audio stays on your Mac, there is no account, and the only thing that can fail is your microphone.
We do this test with VoxFlow Pro for Mac: after the first launch it types with Wi-Fi off, because there is no VoxFlow server in the loop at all.
VoxFlow is signed with a Developer ID issued to BIT Technology s.r.o. and notarized by Apple, and the download page lists the SHA-256 checksum.
