Best Habit Tracker App 2026: Pick the One That Survives Your Worst Week

Six habit tracker apps compared by what they do after a missed day

Most "best habit tracker" lists rank apps by features. That is the wrong test for most people, because the usual reason a habit app gets deleted is not a missing feature. It is the bad week: the trip, the sick child, the late shift, after which opening the app means looking at a broken record.

So this page ranks nothing. It puts six iOS habit trackers side by side, explains what each one is built around, and helps you pick by the reason you stopped using the last one. If you have never quit a habit app, almost any of them will do. If you have quit three, the reason matters more than the rating.

Disclosure: this page is published by the makers of BeMooore, one of the six apps. Prices, ratings and every quoted line about the other apps come from their own App Store listings (US storefront, retrieved 6 October 2026). BeMooore is a young app with no public App Store ratings yet; the others have thousands. Weigh that honestly.

Pick by the reason you quit last time

The fastest way to choose is to be honest about why the previous app stopped working. Each reason below links to a longer, fair guide that also says when to stay with the app you have.

If you want the full picture, nine iOS trackers are compared on exactly one point, what happens after a missed day, in our missed-day habit tracker comparison.

Why the missed day is the real test

In the best-known study of real-world habit formation, Lally and colleagues (2010) followed people building a new daily habit for 12 weeks. Missing a single opportunity did not materially affect how automatic the habit became. The median time to automaticity was 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254. In other words, almost everyone misses a day long before a habit is settled, and the miss itself does little harm.

What does the harm is the reaction to it. Psychologists call it the abstinence violation effect (Marlatt and Gordon, 1985), or more casually the "what the hell" effect (Cochran and Tesser, 1996): once the plan feels broken, the next lapse feels cheaper. An app that shows a reset counter or a lost chain the morning after a miss is, without meaning to, pushing you toward that second lapse.

The best habit tracker is not the one you open on day 3. It is the one you still open on day 23, the morning after a bad weekend.

Four questions that decide it

Whichever app you are considering, install it and check these four things before you commit to a paid plan:

1. What does the screen show the morning after a miss? A broken chain or a zero tells you that you failed. A next step tells you what to do.

2. Is progress counted in streaks or in weeks? "Five out of seven days, four weeks running" survives a bad Tuesday. A consecutive-day counter does not.

3. Does the app ask why you missed it? The cause of a miss, time, energy, place or simply forgetting, is the most useful information you have about a habit. A reminder does not collect it.

4. Can you test it through a bad week for free? You only learn whether an app suits you after your first rough patch, so you need a free tier or a trial long enough to reach it.

Where BeMooore fits, and where it does not

BeMooore is deliberately narrower than the other five. Its App Store listing opens with the problem: "Miss one day and everything resets to zero. That is why most habit apps stop working after week two." What the listing says it does instead:

Where the others are stronger, honestly: Streaks and Habitify integrate with Apple Health and have Watch support; Habitify and Productive handle long habit lists and detailed statistics; Fabulous has human coaching and self-care content; Habitica has a game and a party; Productive has challenges against other users. BeMooore has none of those, is iOS only and has no public rating history yet. The download is free and the paid plan starts with a 1-week free trial that you can cancel in Settings.

If one bad day is where you usually quit, BeMooore was built for that moment: one habit, one tap, and when you skip a day your progress stays while an AI mentor asks what got in the way and adjusts the plan. Free on iOS, with a 1-week free trial for the paid plan.

Whatever you choose, plan the day after a miss

No app can do this part for you. Decide in advance what you will do the day after a miss, and two rules will matter more than which tracker you installed:

Never miss twice. One missed day is noise. Make the day after a miss the only day that counts, and make that version of the habit tiny.

Name the cause of every miss. Write one line: time, energy, place or forgot. After three weeks the pattern is usually obvious and you can move the habit to a better anchor. More on anchors in morning rituals and on forgiving apps in a tracker that forgives missed days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best habit tracker app in 2026?

It depends on why you stopped using the last one. If you rarely miss, a streak app such as Streaks or a chain-based app such as Productive works well. If one bad day usually ends the habit, pick an app that does not reset your progress after a miss and helps you change the plan. BeMooore is built for that case.

What is the best free habit tracker app for iPhone?

Productive, Fabulous, Habitify, Habitica and BeMooore are all free to download with optional paid plans, while Streaks is a one-time purchase. Check what the free tier allows before you commit, and test the app through at least one bad week.

Which habit tracker does not reset your streak when you miss a day?

Habitify lets you mark a habit as skipped and pause it when life changes. BeMooore goes further: missed days do not wipe your progress, and an AI mentor asks what got in the way and adjusts the plan. Streaks counts consecutive days and Productive counts chains of perfect days, so a miss breaks the run.

Is BeMooore better than Streaks or Habitify?

Not for everyone. Streaks and Habitify integrate with Apple Health and have long rating histories. BeMooore has no public ratings yet and focuses on one habit and on what happens after a miss. Choose it if a broken streak is the reason you quit before.
